6 Ways to Move Internationally

by Steven Brown

Moving internationally can be a daunting task. Not only do you have to plan the logistics of packing up your belongings and transporting them to your new home, but you also have to plan for adjusting to a new culture and customs.

While it can seem overwhelming, you can make moving across the world an exciting adventure with the right information and planning. Whether you’re moving for work, study, or retirement, there are several options available for moving internationally, each with its pros and cons.

From hiring international movers to shipping your belongings, here are six ways to move internationally.

  1. Hiring a Professional Moving Company

The best way to move internationally is to hire a reputable and professional moving company. A professional moving company will handle all aspects of your international move, from start to finish, making the process much easier. Moving companies can help you with everything from initial research to finding the right shipping company to packing and moving your items.

Hiring a moving company will help you to save time and energy and ensure your belongings are properly packed and protected for the trip.

There are a few things to remember when hiring a moving company. First, ensure the company has experience moving internationally. You can do this by asking for references and reading reviews to understand what others have experienced when using the company.

Next, you’ll want to determine how the company charges for its services. This will vary by company, so it’s essential to get an International moving quote to Europe from the US to compare moving prices and understand the details before deciding. Then, you’ll also want to consider which type of service you plan to hire.

Several variations of service are available depending on your needs, and they include:

  •  Full service: This includes everything from researching, paperwork, packing, moving, and unpacking to arranging your items in your new destination.]
  • Partial services: This includes a few services of your choice. It can either be packing and moving or moving your items after you’ve packed them.
  1. Shipping Your Belongings

If you’re moving internationally and don’t want to hire a moving company, consider shipping your belongings. You can use two shipping services: ocean freight and air freight. Ocean freight is the sea-based transportation of cargo between two ports by ship. However, air freight is the transportation of cargo by aircraft.

We’ll start with ocean freight. If you choose this option, keep in mind that it will take a long time for your belongings to arrive at their destination. The upside to this delay is that you can book the shipment at any time of the year. Another option is to hire a freight forwarder to help you find a suitable shipping company.

If you decide to go with air freight, your belongings will arrive at their destination within two weeks. However, you’ll need to book your shipment at least three months before you would like it to arrive.

  1. Renting a Moving Container

Renting a container is an excellent option if you have many heavy or fragile items that need to be transported. They are a great way to move belongings without hiring movers or driving across the border.

Downside to renting a moving container is that you will be responsible for unloading your belongings once you arrive at your new location.

You will also need to do all the paperwork for clearances at the customs offices in your new destination. This may include customs fees, taxes and insurance papers if you are shipping your car.

  1. Moving With a Freight Forwarder

If you want to move your belongings internationally but don’t have space for shipping them, you can use a freight forwarder. This is a service that helps you transport your items by land. A freight forwarder can help you arrange transportation, insurance, and other aspects of your move, making it much more straightforward.

Freight forwarders are often used when you have many belongings that you want to transport but don’t have the means to do so by land or sea. They are a great option if you don’t want to use a standard moving company and want to save money by transporting your items by land.

  1. Flying With Your Belongings

If you have many valuable, fragile, or expensive items, flying with your items often makes the most sense. This is especially true if you don’t have many belongings and would like to save money on hiring movers.

Flying with your belongings is a great way to make your move simpler. However, it is essential to know that most airlines have limits on baggage weight. Any extra baggage weighing more than the set limit will incur additional charges.

  1. Driving Across Borders

If you are driving across borders, you will likely be asked to pay an import fee when you arrive at your destination. This is standard practice when bringing vehicles across borders. Once you arrive at your destination and present your vehicle to customs, they will inspect it to ensure it meets the country’s safety standards.

For example, if you are driving into the USA, you will go through an open point of entry staffed with US customs and border patrol officers. The officers will request all the necessary documentation, including your driving license, passport, car insurance, original car log books, and written authorization to take the car to another country from a rental company if you’ve rented the car. They will also inspect the vehicle to ensure it meets all safety standards.

Conclusion

Moving internationally is a great way to experience new cultures and see new places. Whether you’re moving for work, education, or any other reason, keep these tips in mind to make your international move as smooth as possible.
