Stepping into a new house is a special occasion for many as it signifies new beginnings in one’s life. Indians are generally particular about shubh muhurats, when it comes to buying a property or shifting to a new house. They believe that performing a Griha Pravesh, which is basically the house warming ceremony on an auspicious day, will bring them good fortune. Griha Pravesh is a Hindu ritual where a puja ceremony is conducted on an auspicious muhurat when a person moves into a new house for the first time.

A Griha Pravesh is essentially a ritual performed by the family members of the newly acquired property before they move into their new abode. The rituals performed at this ceremony aim to bring good luck and prosperity to the family. These rituals include singing bhajans, offering prayers to deities and ancestors, distributing gifts among family members and neighbors, etc.,

The most crucial aspect of Griha Pravesh is performing puja for all house deities. This includes lighting lamps inside and outside the home as well as chanting mantras by spiritual leaders such as pandas, mahants, etc.,

Why is the Griha Pravesh puja so popular?

Griha Pravesh is a Hindu puja ceremony that takes place when one enters a new home. For the first time to purify the environment and protect the house from negative energies.

It is performed as part of the Griha Pravesh Puja Ceremony, also known as the Griha pravesh or house warming ceremony. When one enters a new home for the first time it purify the environment and protect the house from negative energies.

The pandemic has made us realize that more than ever before. We need to keep our minds and bodies focused on what matters most: family and friends. The pandemic has forced us to look inward, so why not take this opportunity to focus on ourselves? We can do this by giving thanks for all that we have been blessed with in life, our health, our relationships. All that makes us who we are.

Exactly why is it scream a housewarming?

People traditionally celebrate their first entry into their new home by performing. A griha pravesh or house warming ceremony and inviting friends and family. The term “housewarming” may have originated years ago when there was no access to central heating in the home. People would gather around the fireplace. Which would be lit with wood brought by guests in order to literally ‘warm’ the house.

In what way should Griha Pravesh puja be performed?

Griha Pravesh Puja is an ancient Hindu ritual that is performe before entering a new house. This ritual is meant to welcome positive energy into your home and remove negative energies. You can also invite a priest for chanting the shlokas and mantras during this puja.

Here’s how you can perform Griha Pravesh Puja:

  • Break an ash gourd and leave it at the entrance of the threshold of the house. The lady of the house should also break a coconut and place this on the threshold as this signifies the removal of obstacles.
  • Perform Kalash puja by filling a pot with water and nine types of grains, along with a coin. A red cloth is tied around the coconut. And placed on the Kalash with mango leaves placed at the sides of the Kalash.
  • Take this pot inside the house and place it near the ceremonial fireplace or havan.
  • During the housewarming ceremony, a Havan is performed to cleanse the three sins. Earth digging, tree cutting, and stone breaking. The havan is performe to seek the almighty’s blessings in order to counteract the negative effects. All family members should gather around the Havan Kund to participate in it while the priest chants the sacred mantras. The aromatic and medicinal herbs and camphor used during Griha Pravesh havan purify the home, remove negative vibes, and represent auspicious new beginnings with good energies.
  • Light diyas and lamps to attract spiritual energies and divine protection.
  • If you’re having a house warming ceremony, then you might want to consider performing some sort of puja, whether it’s for the benefit of your family or for the community.
  • Vastu Shastra suggests that one should never blow out a puja diya by blowing air from one’s mouth. Instead, one can do a Ganpati Puja or Satyanarayan Puja on the day of the house warming ceremony. These rituals can be conducted after the Vastu Shanti Hawan, which will help remove obstacles. And bring good fortune and health.
  • Ganesh is believe to be able to remove obstructions. He is also known as “The Remover of Obstacles.” So it makes sense that he would be honored during this auspicious time.
  • Satyanarayana (a form of Lord Vishnu) Puja is one of the easiest rituals and is believe to bring good fortune, health, and prosperity.
