What Are Common Mistakes in Creating Resume?

After following all the guidelines and having ended up with something of a resume.. You may ask, “What else can I do to build my resume up?”. In this how-to write a resume guide we will be going over rookie mistakes potential job market newbies can fall into if they do not care.

Here are 6 things to take care of while writing your resume to make sure you resume turns out perfect. Additionally, I will be looking at a couple of tools I would use to build my resume.

Let’s get started

1. Spelling and Grammatical mistakes

Nothing screams unprofessional more than a hastily put together resume riddled with spelling mistakes and semantic and syntactic grammatical mistakes.

To avoid this always proof read your resumes after making them. Always ask yourself, “Can I build my resume any better?”. Try and out your self in the employers shoes and try and read your resume objectively and honestly try and answer this very simple question, “Would you hire the individual who’s resume you hold in your hands?”. If No, then obviously there’s still work that needs to be done.

A well crafted resume absent of any fundamental mistakes is always going to be appreciated by employers as it shows professionalism and interest in the position itself.

Another “how to write a resume” trick to avoid such mistakes is to let a family member or friend go through your resume before sending it in and make improvements based on their feedback.

2. Do not Lie

This may as well go without saying but  lying on a resume is the biggest mistake anyone could make. This usually happens when individuals feel insecure about the content of their honest resume so they tend to embellish to make up for the lack. This however can land you into a whole lot of trouble because if it comes out (and it tends to do so) that you were dishonest on your resume, not only will this result in you losing the job but this could also lead you to from getting black balled from the entire industry itself.

3. Unacceptable Formatting

An easy way to mess up your otherwise perfect resume is to divert from that standards of formatting. A properly formatted resume is accurately sectioned with each section having it’s own acceptable heading and should consist of the most relevant of content for each of the headings.

Keep the designing to a minimum and don’t mess around with font sizes and styles too much. For a more safe approach use a universally acceptable font such as “Time New Roman” or “Helvetica” and keep the font size to between 10-13 pts for content and between 12-15 pts for headings.

4. Don’t drag on

Self promotion is good, in fact it is encouraged but know when enough is enough. Establishing your fit for the job using notewrty achievements in the relative field is one thing but no one wants to hear your life story, dragging on from one age to the next.

If you must elaborate, use the job description section from the job listing for reference and see what skill or work history relates closely to the job requirement and add only relevant information to your resume.

This practice helps you save up space on your resume and keeps it from being too lengthy.

5. Stop focusing on irrelevant information

Obviously, your resume should reflect your ability to get the job done when it comes to the day-to-day. That being said, that can be said about any other resume that will be sent in the HR Office for that position. To give yourself an advantage don’t dwell on your ability to do the bare minimum which will be expected of you anyways, instead mention specific, noteworthy achievements that will catch the HR Manager’s eye.

6. Using the one size fits all approach

Many beginner resume makers make the simple mistake of using the same resume for all job opportunities. This shows a disinterested candidate with a non chalant attitude.

It is recommended that candidates tailor and cater their resumes according to the needs of each job listing. This simply means that in order to get optimum results from the entire job seeking experience, candidates should make multiple targeted resumes, each job specific to each job opportunity.
