Factors to Consider When Buying a Drum Set

Drum Set

A good drum set is one of the most essential things you need to get started in learning how to be a drummer. Aside from the skills, you really need to find the right drum set that suits you best in order to play at your best.

Pro drummers might look like they own the best equipment but it actually took them a lot of time to find the right pieces for them. As a beginner drummer, it is also part of your journey to find the right drum set that suits your style the most. For newbies who are planning to buy their first drum set, here are the factors that need to be considered when choosing drum kits.

New or Used?

Before anything else, you could actually opt whether to buy new or used drum set. Used drum sets are usually chosen by those who want to save or have limited budget to buy their first drum kit. Aside from that, there is also less waste in case you lose interest in playing especially if you’re still not sure if you’d really love drums. You can also be sure that the drum set is durable since they already lasted long enough to prove it.

On the other hand, if you’re really sure with your interest in learning drums, investing in a brand new drum set would be a wise choice. They may be a bit expensive than used sets but you can be sure that they are in pristine condition and you have broader options when it comes to brands and types. They also come in warranty, giving you more security in your investment.

Acoustic or Electronic

There are two main types of drum sets – the acoustic and electronic. An acoustic drum set is pretty straightforward. It has cymbals made from metal and drums made from metal and wood. The sound created is controlled by the drummer on how hard the toms are hit by the sticks. On the other hand, an electronic drum kit has rubber pads instead of the regular materials. These rubber pads transmit the sound to the amplifiers so you can either reduce or increase the volume.

Parts to Look For

Drum kits contain a lot of parts and it can be confusing what to look for at first. The basic parts of a drum set include cymbals, tom drums, snare drums, stands or racks, drumsticks, brushes, drumheads, and a drum throne.

After purchasing a kit, you need to know how to assemble and disassemble it so you can set it up on your own anytime you need. Drum sets usually come in either 4- or 5-piece set. The number refers to the number of drums and not all the other parts of the set.

Once you already figured out what drum set suits your playing style, finding the right one that matches won’t be that hard anymore. Choosing the right drum is more of a personal preference and it’s all up to you which one you feel comfortable playing with.
