Empanadillas: The Complete Guide

by Steven Brown

You probably won’t find “Empanadillas” among your local university’s course offerings, but we happen to think this would be a great way to learn about Argentinian culture and cuisine.

What Are Empanadillas?

The empanada is a food with a lot of history. These hand pies are usually made up of a combination of meats, vegetables, and cheese contained in flaky dough. They originated in Spain and Portugal hundreds of years ago – maybe even as far back as the 16th century! Empanadillas were introduced to Latin America by Spanish colonists, and they remain very popular to this day. Argentinian Empanadillas like ours usually include beef, chicken, or vegetables and cheese.

Empanadillas began as a workday lunch due to their convenience, but they quickly became an important part of Argentinian culture. Families often come together to prepare and eat this versatile food during parties and Sunday dinners.

How Can You Eat Empanadillas?

Eat local Minnesota Empanadillas at lunch, as an after-school snack, or as your main dish at dinner – they’re great for any meal! You can eat your Empanadillas on their own since they are so packed with flavor, or you can “dress them up” with additional flavors that complement the other dishes at the family barbecue or party. People in Argentina and all over the world have created many delicious sauces to go with their Empanadillas: , ají criollo, creamy avocado dips, and many more.

What Makes Empanadillas Great?

Empanadillas are so versatile that they can be eaten at any time of day, as a snack or a meal, alone or with a condiment. They are a great grab-and-go food, and since Empanadillas are handheld, there’s very little mess. Our frozen Empanadillas are also incredibly convenient; they go from freezer to table in as few as 20 minutes. Who wouldn’t love a quick, easy, and delicious frozen food that is made with high-quality ingredients right here in Minnesota?
