Kanye West’s eighth studio album, “Ye,” was released on June 1, 2018. The week of the release, West dropped a merch line to coincide with the album. Included in the line was a white hoodie with “Lucky Me I See Ghosts” printed in red across the front. The backstory to this hoodie is quite interesting.
West had been working on the album for over a year and originally planned to titled it “Turbo Grafx 16.” The title is in reference to a video game console from 1989. However, after rapper Kid Cudi checked himself into rehab for mental health issues, West decided to change the album name to “Ye” in order to show solidarity with Cudi.
In addition to the album title change, West also changed the cover art for the album. The original cover art was a photograph of mountains taken by Peter Lik that West had paid $5 million for. However, after learning about Lik’s history of lawsuits involving copyright infringement and photography theft, West replaced the photo with one of star Chance The Rapper instead.
Given all of these changes, it’s not surprising that the merch line also underwent some alterations. Along with renaming several items in the line, West also created a new logo for “Ye.” The logo is simple yet powerful; it consists of only three lines and three circles placed strategically around them.
The hoodie included in the merch line is one of my favorite pieces because it ties together all of these elements perfectly; it commemorates both Kid Cudi and Chance The Rapper as well as pays homage to Kanye West’s hometown of Chicago.
