The Addictive Nature of Kratom and Kratom Addiction Warning Signs

Addictive Nature of Kratom

Although kratom has gained popularity as a treatment for opiate addiction, it is a highly addictive chemical in and of itself. Dependence on kratom, which produces withdrawal symptoms similar to opioids, can develop within as little as six months. Kratom abusers who regularly use the drug are more likely to suffer from withdrawal symptoms as they build dependence and tolerance. Some of the most typical physical kratom withdrawal symptoms include:

  • Insomnia
  • Dilated pupils
  • Muscular pain
  • Vision impairment
  • Diarrhea
  • Abdominal pain
  • Vomiting
  • Seizures
  • Fever

Psychological kratom withdrawal symptoms include:

  • Anxiety
  • Agitation
  • Depression
  • Irritability

After prolonged and intense use, a condition known as post-acute withdrawal syndrome (PAWS) might set in. Individuals battling PAWS may go through periods of intense anxiety, depression, and insomnia that can last weeks to months.

Effects of Kratom Addiction

The short-term and long-term effects of kratom and kratom components are still a topic of active study. The effects of kratom, like any other drug, can vary significantly from one person to the next, depending on factors such as potency, dosage, route of administration, product composition, underlying medical conditions, history of substance abuse, and more. Kratom has been shown to have a far lower potential for addiction and overdose compared to other stimulants and prescription opioids.

Researchers have shown that chronic kratom abusers risk developing kratom addiction and dependence. This is possible as the body adjusts to constant kratom exposure. As the body gets used to not having the chemical anymore, kratom withdrawal symptoms may appear if the user suddenly stops taking it.  The danger of developing kratom addiction and dependence seems to be most significant for persons who frequently ingest greater dosages (more than 25 g per day)

Kratom Addiction Warning Signs

Despite the negative consequences, a person’s ongoing, compulsive drug use must meet specific criteria for a substance use disorder diagnosis. These characteristics are listed in the DSM-5, a reference book issued by the American Psychiatric Association.

Here are the kratom addiction warning signs.

  1. Being unable to limit one’s consumption or abuse of the kratom drug.
  2. Disinterest in past interests, whether social, recreational, or otherwise.
  3. Relapse into kratom drug abuse despite repeated efforts to abstain.
  4. A drop in efficiency at home, in class, or on the job.
  5. Being careless with one’s obligations and interpersonal commitments.
  6. Keeping on using the substance despite fully understanding the potential consequences of doing so.
  7. Increased dosing is required to have the same effect, a phenomenon known as tolerance.
  8. Experiencing withdrawal symptoms upon cessation of drug use.
