Prophet Ishmael was born to a noble family in Mecca. When he reached adulthood, he married Hajar, who bore him a son, Ibrahim. One night, while Ibrahim and his father were out hunting, an angel appeared to them and commanded them to leave their home and journey to Mount Hira to perform the pilgrimage.
Upon completing their journey, they settled in Madinah, where Prophet Ishmael served as a custodian for the Kaaba and preached Islam. He passed away at the age of 112 years old.

Muhammad (PBUH) later said that Kaaba was like “the house of God which He has shown me” [Quran 2:125]. In 632 A.D., after becoming the prophet of Islam, Muhammad led prayers at Kaaba for the first time and declared it an integral part of Islam.

In the Holy Quran, Allah says: “And We built the Qiblah (directional shrine) at Bakkah and made it an Aqsa (i.e., sanctuary) for mankind, and a place of prayer for Abraham and Ishmael and Isaac and Jacob. And We appointed therein twelve stones, some of them are very great.” (Holy Quran, 2:115)
According to scholars of Islam, the Qiblah is the direction in which Muslims should face when praying. The first Qiblah was located in Mecca in Saudi Arabia.
