Miller blade The Miller blade of the laryngoscope is a straight blade that allows the vocal cords to be viewed by directly lifting the epiglottis. It is useful for “flexible” airways and therefore popular in pediatric anesthesia. The Miller blade is the most used blade today.
Miller found that the traditional flat blade was too thick and too short at the base, which increased the risk of tooth injury. Miller redesigned the then-common laryngoscope to make tracheal intubation easier and safer. Miller’s blades blade has a straight blade with a long-curved tip, which allows better exposure of the larynx. This facilitates difficult intubation, especially before the use of muscle relaxants, and reduces dental trauma.
Miller designed the blade to be flatter and longer than the old average blade, which was rounded at the bottom and narrower at the end, with an additional two thousand of a point. This makes difficult intubation easier and reduces tooth damage. In his opinion, it is suitable for all patients except children.
In 1946, Miller developed a blade for children. He suggested that tracheal intubation under direct vision was superior to the usual practice of blindly providing a passage facilitated by palpation of the epiglottis.
The blade designed by Miller was flatter and longer than the average old-style blade, rounded at the bottom, narrower at the end, and with an additional two centimeters of curvature at the tip. This facilitated difficult intubation and reduced tooth trauma. Since then, laryngoscopes ranging from size 0 (for premature babies) to size 4 have been available.
