Models Of Communication

We communicate every day, and we know how to communicate with one another. Therefore the ways of understanding communications theorists have developed several ways to know this. Harold D. Lasswell, the famous US communication theorist once said that “Who says what to whom with what effect?”

In this article, we are going to discuss the models of communication. These models are very important, and it helps you to know further about several environmental communication models.

In this case, we will give you a detailed description of major communications models and also the process of helping in workplace communication.

What Are Models Of Communication?

According to the theorist, Denis Mcquail has said, “a model is a selective representation in verbal or diagrammatic form of some aspect of the dynamic process of mass communication.”

In other words, models of communication are visual representations of several aspects of every communication situation. Apart from that, it is difficult to determine where a particular conversation starts and ends because it is a complicated process. That is why theorists have developed communication models to simplify the process of understanding communication.

Some models have more detailed information about the other models. But the most elaborate ones cannot represent the clear visuality in a communication encounter.

8 Major Models Of Communication

Below we have discussed the detailed description about eight major models of communication.

1. Aristotle’s Model

Aristotle’s Model is one of the oldest communication models and also a linear communication mode. Aristotle’s model was designed to examine how to be a better and more impressive communicator.

It is a reliable way if you want to communicate deliberately in public speaking, lectures, seminars, and so on. If you follow this communication model, then you will shine while passing messages to the receiver.

Aristotle discovered three important elements that improve communication quality.

Ethos: ethos defines the credibility of the speaker. Speakers will gain authority, credibility, and power when they are an expert in a field of their choice.

Pathos: Pathos means when the speaker connects the audience through several emotions like anger, happiness, and sadness)

Logos: Logos means when an important element defines logic. It means the speaker needs to follow the rules of defining logic.

2. Laswell’s Model

The next linear model is Laswell’s model of mass communication. According to the visuality of this model, communication is the transmission of the message with the result. The effect is obvious and measurable changes of this model, and it is caused by the elements of communication. In this case, if any element changes, the effect will also change.

Laswell’s model had five important questions regarding its elements.

  •  Who is the creator of the message?
  • What have they said?
  • What are the channels that have been used?
  • To whom have they said?
  • What are the effects that have on the receiver?

The answers to those questions are the main component of this model:

  • Communicator
  • Message
  • Medium
  • Receiver/audience
  • Effect

3. The Shannon-Weaver Model

Maybe the Shannon-Weaver model is the popular model of communication. Shannon and Weaver were mathematicians. They developed their work during the Second World War in the Bell Telephone Laboratories. Their aim was to discover which channels are the most effective for communication purposes.

Although they were doing research for developing the engineering sector, after all, they had claimed that their theory was only applicable to human communication purposes.

Now below, we have discussed the components of Shannon Weaver of the communication model.

  • Sender
  • Encoder
  • Channel
  • Decoder
  • Receiver

Shannon Weaver was the first person who introduced the role of noise in the communication process. The noise mainly appears in the form of mishearing a conversation, static on a radio broadcast, and also misspelling an email.

4. Berlo’s S-M-C-R Model

Berlo’s communication model is unique because each step has its own key elements. This model explains communication in four steps:

  • Source
  • Message
  • Channel
  • Receiver

5. The Osgood-Schramm Model

The Osgood-Schramm Model is useful because it describes interpersonal, synchronous communication. But this model is not suitable if the receiver gives little or no feedback.

In this model, there will be no differences between a sender and a receiver. Both parties are able to encode and decode the message equally. In this case, an interpreter is a person striving to understand the message.

6. The Westley And Maclean Model

Another one of the major communication models is The Westley and Maclean Model and a transactional model. It helps to explain mass communication. This model introduces the cultural and environmental factors of communication.

7. Barnlund’s Transactional Model

Berglund’s Transactional Model explores interpersonal and immediate-feedback communication. It is a multi-layered feedback system.

8. Dance’s Helical Model

Dance’s Helical Model represents that when communication happens in a circular process. The dance’s helical model is represented by a helical spiral.

Conclusion

We have mentioned the eight major models in communication above in this article. Those eight communication models have described that communication will happen through a proper system. Through communication models also, you will get to know how many persons are involved in the communication model.
