The Office Furniture Lahore Industry

by Steven Brown

Office furniture is a large component of the economy. It is a necessity, not a luxury, and it plays a vital role in the overall health and productivity of employees. In order to produce quality work, it is important for an employer to provide employees with a comfortable, ergonomically designed workspace.

While there are many styles of office furniture, there are two primary categories. The first is the modern style, which features sleek, functional designs. Moreover, the second is the contemporary style, which combines colorful, vibrant elements with a modern aesthetic.

As the United States moved into the 21st century, the office furniture industry experienced a resurgence of interest. Manufacturers are now more focused on producing environmentally-friendly goods, and more pressure is placed on them to use recycled materials in the manufacture of their products.

Although a recession occurred in 1991-1992, the office furniture industry grew during the remainder of the 1990s. This was due in part to the telecommuting trend, which offered office workers a way to work from home. Furthermore, the Internet and local area networks made it possible to work in a remote location. With the growth of e-commerce sites, more and more consumers are using the Internet to purchase a variety of goods.

The office furniture industry was largely based on wood in the early twentieth century. Michigan had an abundance of timber, and it became the home of several major lumber companies. But in the 1930s, as the industrial revolution began, the demand for office furniture increased as merchants, particularly those in the wealthiest sectors, started to require a large supply of desks and chairs.

In 1940s, Knoll, a company founded by a German-born architect, raised eyebrows with futuristic, innovative office furniture. They hired architects such as Carl Magnusson and Emanuel Noguchi. Today, the company’s artful furniture can be seen at many cultural institutions, and its designers have won numerous awards for their work.

Herman Miller is one of the largest office furniture manufacturers in the United States. Originally a residential furniture manufacturer, it expanded into office furniture by the 1950s. Since then, the company has added ergonomic furniture to its product line and has worked with industrial designers to create new concepts.

Another major player in the office furniture industry is HNI Corp., formerly known as HON Industries. Founded in 1944 in Muscatine, Iowa, HNI has become a leader in office furniture and wood-burning fireplaces. By 2004, the company was the largest North American manufacturer of office furniture.

In 2006, office furniture imports to the United States reached $30.8 billion, while exports amounted to $3.7 billion. The market has been closely tied to the economic climate in the U.S. and abroad, with a decline in domestic sales and imports not enough to offset the losses.

Another important factor contributing to the rise and fall of the office furniture industry in the U.S. is the general economic climate.

The rise of the Internet has also had a major influence on the furniture industry in the last decade. The Internet and local area networks have enabled telecommuting, which has made it more convenient for employees to work from home. Likewise, electronic technology has supplanted typewriters and adding machines.
