An attorney is one of those terms that can have different translations depending on the word that precedes or follows it. In today’s column, we’ll cover the Attorney General , United States Attorney , and State Attorney roles , leaving District Attorney for next week.

Attorney General : He is the head of the famous DOJ , Department of Justice .   He holds the fourth most important office in the White House cabinet and is the only department head who is not called a Secretary . He is appointed by the President of the United States and considered the “head of the largest law firm in the world” and the “central agency for the enforcement of federal laws”. The attorney general represents the United States in general legal matters and provides advice and opinions to the presidency and ministries when requested. In extremely important cases he can make oral arguments before the Supreme Court.  His position, in terms of hierarchy, corresponds to that of Minister of Justice, however, he has functions that in Brazil are performed by the Attorney General of the Republic and also by the Attorney General of the Union.

US Attorneys : These are the “nation’s attorneys” ( the Nation’s Litigators ) who represent the federal government in criminal and civil cases, acting in all federal districts. A United States Attorney has a term of office of 4 years.   There are 94 United States Attorneys in the United States. US Attorneys are also appointed by the US President, confirmed by  the Senate, and usually participate actively in the political scene like all aspirants to public office in the United States.   The position, in terms of its functions, corresponds to that of Public Prosecutor in Brazil.

State’s Attorney General : Unlike attorneys general in the federal system, state attorneys general in the United States are elected and lead a team of State attorneys who primarily handle civil cases. At the state level, State Attorneys also act as prosecutors, representing their respective state governments in criminal proceedings and may work with district attorneys in criminal investigations. The position of State Attorney General is similar to that of State Attorney General and that of State Attorney  to that of State Attorney.
